How Disability Insurance works and why you need it?
Updated: Sep 19, 2022
Have you ever considered how you would pay your bills if you were to become very sick or disabled?
In my experience- most of us are so in the mode of work, work, work, then pay, pay, pay then hopefully save, save, save for the future. That tends to be the rhythm of life for most working folks. But what if you become very ill? Or involved in an accident and could not work? And it does not need to be doom and gloom. Maybe you are an ER nurse who really needs your hands in order to work and you injure just one hand when hanging up your Halloween decorations. I had a friend who needed neck surgery after placing her star at the top of her Christmas tree. Accidents happen- That is why disability insurance is so important. It pays you directly if you are not able to work so that you can keep paying the bills.
If I am ill, I want my focus to be on getting better and not on whether my family is still able to be taken care of while I'm recovering. Paying the mortgage or medical bills can be stressful especially if I'm no longer able to work. It is more than stressful- it is scary. And I am not alone- Sadly, two-thirds of working Americans (63%) couldn’t make it six months before financial difficulties would set in—and 14% said they would have problems immediately, according to the 2020 Insurance Barometer Study by Life Happens and LIMRA.
Disability insurance does not need to be expensive or difficult to purchase. It just requires some homework on the client's end and a conversation with an experienced agent about the process.
